‘Munchkin’ #5 shows the problems with time travel

    ByLogan Dalton May 26, 2015February 25, 2025

Munchkin #5 truly captures the ridiculous, wonderful, and confusing parts of time travel.(Ian McGinty illustrates the confusing part in a single panel time paradox.) It is also has a good combination of over the top and witty humor for fans of all comedic persuasions. It’s a great read for anyone still figuring out what the hell happened in Matt Smith’s last episode of Doctor Who.

    ByAnnie May 25, 2015February 25, 2025

Nightbreed comes with dark tones and shows the icky side of humanity. It shows what happens to people who are seen as outcasts or wicked by their appearance. The gloomy settings and world spanning tale allows for the reader to grow with the narrative and want to know more about Nightbreeds. The comic holds the potential to rise to something grand in the next set of the collection.

Game of Thrones, Ep. 5.07: “The Gift” is the best yet of season five

    ByRicky D May 25, 2015February 25, 2025

Winter is coming, and things will only get worse. At the wall, Jon Snow leaves on a mission without the full support of his men. Ignoring Ser Alliser Thorne’ advice, the Lord Commander follows through with his plan to free Tormund Giantsbane and join him in rescuing the Wildlings north of the Wall. Notice how the camera once again lingers on Ollie in the background, further proving my suspicions that the young boy can’t be trusted. Is mutiny on the horizon?

Silicon Valley, Ep. 2.07: “Adult Content” sets the season up for success

    ByJj Perkins May 25, 2015February 25, 2025

For as much as the show splits up the cast into Richard/Erlich A-plots and Dinesh/Gilfoyle B-plots, with Jared playing utility man, the core of the show is still the interaction between all of those characters, so by having them all sit down to discuss what they’re going to do about End Frame gives the show that opportunity to have its main cast play off of each other. Gilfoyle gets to dryly ask a series of “What ifs”, Erlich righteously declares that he solely increases porn traffic on the interent by one percent, Richard and Dinesh get to vacillate between shock and supposed moral authority, Jared is there to provide background information. It’s a good scene that gets to the heart of what makes the show enjoyable: Easy chemistry resulting in banter in either hyper-nerdy tech speak or insults like calling someone a “fucking king-sized asshole.”

Penny Dreadful, Ep. 2.04, “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places” crams in as much as it can

    ByChris Evangelista May 25, 2015February 25, 2025

Everyone pairs up in the latest episode of Penny Dreadful, “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places.” Penny Dreadful is obviously an ensemble show, but it’s always had a problem knowing quite what to do with its plethora of characters. After last week’s series highlight episode, which slowed things down and focused on a single coherent story, the show gets back to business, with “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places,” attempting to cram in as much information as possible relevant to season two’s main plot.

Orphan Black, Ep. 3.06, “Certain Agony of the Battlefield” strengthens season three’s return to form

    ByKate Kulzick May 24, 2015February 25, 2025

Given the inconsistency of Orphan Black season three, it was easy to fear last week’s moving installment would be a blip in an otherwise unremarkable season. Thankfully, “Certain Agony of the Battlefield” builds on the strengths of its predecessor, continuing its character-based approach and efforts to tie as many threads as possible into the central narrative of the season, Project Castor’s conflict with Sarah and the rest of Clone Club.

‘Forbidden Empire’ has interesting visuals but a rushed pace

    ByThomas O'Connor May 23, 2015February 25, 2025

Though we may not like to admit it, some movies simply have the deck stacked against them. Case in point, Forbidden Empire. Forbidden Empire is, in fact, a dubbed and re-cut version of Viy, a 2014 Russian fantasy-horror film with a very interesting pedigree. The film is based off a short story by Nikolai Gogol, one of the more towering figures of classic Russian literature, and was previously adapted into a film of the same name in 1967. The previous version of Viy is regarded as something of an unsung classic, an immensely watchable gem rife creative and memorable effects sequences. The new film, however, eschews most of the practical effects wizardry that made the original what it is in favor of CGI effects. So, in summary, it’s a re-cut, dubbed version of a classic film that replaces practical effects with computer generated ones. Now you see why Forbidden Empire, from the first frame, is already in a losing battle for the affection of viewers who are in the know about what they’re actually watching.

The original ‘Poltergeist’ successfully blends horror and family melodrama

    ByJacob Carter May 23, 2015February 25, 2025

The original 1982 Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper, opens with an apt image: an extreme close-up of a television set. Not only does the object prove pivotal to the film’s narrative, but the close proximity of the camera to the screen imbues the television with a strange, almost alien quality. Though it simply plays the national anthem over patriotic imagery, the signature sign-off for most TV stations in the 1980s, the close-up distorts the pictures and renders them wholly indeterminable. For a film that explores the dark unknowns that lie beneath the seemingly innocent and ordinary, Poltergeist certainly knows how to prime its audience for what’s to come.

Consider the ante officially upped in ‘Archie Vs. Predator’ #2

    ByHalden Fraley May 22, 2015February 25, 2025

Now that we’re halfway through Archie Vs. Predator, it would make sense for pieces of the overarching plot to begin to take shape. If Archie Vs. Predator was a bad comic, it would fail to accomplish this task. If it was a good comic, it would already have done it and be content with itself. As it happens, Archie Vs. Predator is not simply a good or a bad comic, but an absolutely insane one. Our outdated notions of “quality” have no bearing on a comic such as this, and require a more in-depth analysis in order to fully understand it’s secrets.

Twin Peaks, Ep. 2.11: “Masked Ball”: Off the board, off the wall

    ByLes Chappell May 22, 2015February 25, 2025

The long-awaited revival of Twin Peaks returned from its own horrific limbo in the Black Lodge earlier this month, when David Lynch announced on Twitter that he’d worked out a deal with Showtime to honor his original commitment to direct the third season—only six weeks after he’d walked away from the project in a similarly public fashion. The news was met with universal acclaim and relief, because after being told this unique show was coming back, it felt wrong that the auteur from whose mind it sprang had to be involved to usher his creation into its next stage of life. They wanted to see it so much, in fact, that the show’s original actors even took to social media to offer character-specific similes on what losing him would mean to the show.
