“Defiance” continues the fight to bridge televison and gaming

The world’s first transmedia game. That’s what Trion Worlds and Syfy promised with Defiance; a new level of connectivity between video games and television.  However the results of  this transmedia experiment have been less than stellar-so far. Defiance is set in the year 2046 on a futuristic Earth that has been terraformed beyond recognition by …

Defiance, Ep. 1.13: “Everything is Broken” delivers a satisfying finale

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 13 – “Everything is Broken” Directed by Michael Nankin Written by Kevin Murphy Returns to SyFy in 2014 When Defiance came along a couple months ago, there weren’t high expectations. It’s been a while since good science-fiction series populated TV (turn your attention to Orphan Black, if you didn’t catch the first season). …

Defiance, Ep. 1.12: “Past is Prologue” – A focused set-up to the season finale

Penultimate episodes in seasons are notoriously difficult (unless they’re in a season of Game of Thrones), since most of the work being done is meant to drive attention and expectations towards the finale. Defiance hasn’t really had an up-and-down first season with memorable episodes here and there. It’s mostly just been fine. It’s surprising, then, that it’s the penultimate episode that addresses some of the minor gripes I’ve been having while watching.

Quantum Break Bends the Definition of Gaming

I don’t know a lot about Quantum Break. I know it’s a next-gen game for the Xbox One that will be twinned with a TV series, and I know it’s being developed by Remedy Entertainment, the studio responsible for Max Payne and Alan Wake. It was announced at E3, but its reveal wasn’t accompanied by …

Defiance, Ep. 1.08: “Goodbye, Blue Sky” shirks a cohesive plot in favor of a narrative scattershot

The IMDb editors recently released a list of eight new shows from 2013 that were surprising (mostly in a good way for surpassing expectations), on which Defiance was included. As of now, I don’t quite think it has earned a spot next to some shows like Hannibal, Banshee and Orphan Black, but it’s interesting taking Defiance into the context of some of its fellow freshmen. Vikings, which is also included on the list, shares a lot of similarities to Defiance, and I think the latter show could learn a thing or two from the former.

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 7 – “Brothers in Arms” Directed by Andy Wolk Written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer Airs Monday nights at 9 of SyFy This was the episode of Defiance I was waiting for. For a while now, this series has been hanging its hat on world-building, which hasn’t exactly been disengaging or uninteresting. …

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 6 – “The Serpent’s Egg” Directed by Omar Madha Written by David Weddle and Bradley Thompson Airs Monday nights at 9 on SyFy Since Defiance is content to draw a lot of attention to its soundtrack, I am content to talk about that. In “The Serpent’s Egg,” we find out that Alak …

Defiance, Ep. 1.05: “A Well Respected Man” – Having your eye on the wrong snake

It was in my review of last week’s episode of Defiance that I suggested a StarCraft connection for this series. Maybe it’s because I played those games too much, but that Volge up there looks like it could be an accurate cross between a Protoss Zealot and a Zerg Hydralisk.

Defiance, Ep. 1.03: “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go” – Promises kept and promises broken

Last week, Defiance had a two-hour premiere that functioned almost as a TV movie. There were three acts that were clearly demarcated with the final act typically immersing itself in some high-stakes action. If you missed the premiere and haven’t had a chance to look up any information about Defiance, there’s a lot you should know. First of all, this is a proper science-fiction series, which didn’t use to need to be a preface for a SyFy show.
