How Genre Shows are Getting Female Representation Right

    ByClaire Hellar May 29, 2015February 25, 2025

Shows with female leads or co-leads now have a strong presence on network television, as representations of women in lead roles has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years. The complexity and multi-dimensionality of these roles varies greatly, however, and on more than a few network shows, female leads continue to be idealized…

‘Quicksand’ is a little bit of dark levity courtesy of Mickey Rooney

    ByEdgar Chaput May 29, 2015February 25, 2025

What makes Quicksand such an interesting example is the fact that it never crosses the border over into over comedy. The plot is played seriously, as does the entire cast play their parts as seriously as they can. There are even a couple of legitimately tension-filled scenes during which the unfortunate Dan Brady is a hair away from being caught by authorities (or worse) in the desperate attempts to right increasingly cumbersome series of wrongs.

Wayward Pines, Ep. 1.03, “Our Town, Our Law”

    ByLes Chappell May 28, 2015February 25, 2025

You can say this for Wayward Pines: for a show that’s built on big mysteries and has a lot of actors that most shows would kill to have around for a few episodes, it’s not a show that has any reticence about making big moves.

‘Divinity’ #4 is an emotional conclusion that ends on a positive note

    ByAnthony Spataro May 28, 2015February 25, 2025

Matt Kindt’s script throughout Divinity discusses the flipping through of one’s life story, like it were the pages of some sacred text. We as individuals pave the way for these pages to be written out, even if they aren’t done in a literal sense.

‘Old Man Logan’ #1 is a sad spaghetti western with superheroes

    ByLogan Dalton May 28, 2015February 25, 2025

Old Man Logan #1 is a lot of things. A character study that captures the feral and peaceful parts of Wolverine through Maiolo’s shifting colors (The more violent the panel, the flatter the colors.) and Sorrentino’s layouts and close-ups of his well-worn face. It is also a chance for two of comics’ finest storytellers to place their mark on a classic genre. Even if you hate Wolverine, Old Man Logan #1 is worth picking up for its exploration of one man trying to find a kind of morally grey hope in a world bereft of it wonderfully rendered in a tapestry of blood, gunpowder, and desert sand. Leone, Morricone, and Eastwood would be proud.

Grace and Frankie s1’s tonal inconsistencies and lazy writing wastes its promising premise

    ByMax Bledstein May 28, 2015February 25, 2025

On the surface, Grace and Frankie sounds almost too good to be true. The title characters (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, respectively) are two septuagenarians whose husbands, Robert and Sol (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) announce that they are leaving the women for each other. The strengths and legacies of the actors, the contrast in personalities, and the core hook of the show sound as if they’re tailor-made to deliver Netflix’s next binge-worthy addiction.

‘Spider-Verse’ #1 Spins a Tale of Intrigue and Déjà vu

    ByRiley Biehl May 27, 2015February 25, 2025

In the great wide Battleworld of Secret Wars spin-offs and tie-ins, Spider-Verse #1 stands out as a unique story that seeks to better understand the confusion and strange sense of familiarity our characters (and readers) find themselves in. With a variety of alternate worlds and timelines mashed together is a bizarre patchwork, one has to wonder which characters still exist and what they remember from their past lives. Written by Mike Costa with art by Andre Araujo and Steven Sanders, this debut issue is a fun and intriguing set-up for a tale of multiverse mystery.

Dead Right: How Dirty Harry Captured the ’70s Culture Wars

    ByChristopher Saunders May 27, 2015February 25, 2025

Part I. 1971 was an incredibly violent year for movies. That year saw, among others, Tom Laughlin’s Billy Jack, with its half-Indian hero karate-chopping rednecks; William Friedkin’s The French Connection, its dogged cops stymied by well-heeled drug runners; Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, banned for the copycat crimes it reportedly inspired; and Sam Peckinpah’s Straw…

‘Die Hard: Year One’ Volume 2 is a “Yippee”

    ByBrendan Bergmanski May 27, 2015February 25, 2025

In the first four issues of Die Hard: Year One, readers were let down by a plot overstuffed with characters and lacking any true resemblance of the tone of the original movies. This second volume, collecting issues 5-8, suffers a similar fate in that it fails to ignite any passion in the reader, instead going through the motions and producing an average comic book.

This is not a warm, snuggly comedy that you can watch with grandma and grandpa. No, this movie is the reprobate uncle that nobody wants to bail out of jail. Yet, despite its unabashed rudeness, Pat Mills’ consistently-funny debut doesn’t have a cynical bone its body.

‘Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John’ explores the weird side of this universe

    ByLogan Dalton May 27, 2015February 25, 2025

One of the mainstays of the Bravest Warriors comics and cartoons is the Holo-John. It’s a private room in the Bravest Warriors’ hideout where you can enjoy a fun simulation of your choosing while going to the bathroom. It’s like the Holodeck in Star Trek: TNG’s immature, yet creative cousin. Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John is a special one-shot set entirely in this wonderful little room and shows its storytelling potential. The stories have their funny moments, bizarre bits (I will never unsee Mad Rupert’s drawing of Wallow in his undies.), and the best ones explore the relationship between the Bravest Warriors and various characters, including Beth’s dad, Pickle Chips, and the Holo John himself in a more metaphysical tale from Ryan Ferrier (D4VE) and Jorge Corona (Goners).

‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ is why one 3D Mario game per console may be enough

    ByPatrick Murphy May 26, 2015February 25, 2025

With each new flagship iteration of Mario’s 3D adventures, you can sense Nintendo’s master designers dreading those four little words escaping the player’s lips. From Mario 64 to the latest (and best) example, Super Mario 3D World, the mustachioed plumber’s console titles have adhered to a strict regime of fresh, introducing unique concepts in one level , developing and building on mechanics and ideas only to scrap them at the flagpole, sometimes never to be seen again, no matter how successful. It’s a well-documented philosophy, and one that has bled into to other franchises, not only helping keep a 100-stage game from going stale, but also a 30-year old series. Unfortunately this excellent way of thinking did not apply to the only same-system Mario sequel since the NES: Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I Liked Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch More When They Were Magneto’s Bastards

    ByAndrew Doscas May 26, 2015February 25, 2025

By this point, there’s a mound of evidence to support this theory, most of which have been analyzed and theorized about ad nasueam. There’s been the death of Wolverine, the slow and quiet cancelation of (literally) dozens of X-books, the hiring of Brian Michael Bendis (the ultimate Marvel company man), the lack of marketing and promotion of any X-book, and finally the completely unnecessary and suspicious delay of Uncanny X-Men #600. The most overt act of corporate terrorism waged against the X-Men ,however, has been the retconning of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s origin, an origin which was originally a retcon in itself.
