10 Reasons To Love . . . Ryan Reynolds

So I have a list of five or so actors who are so charismatic, so effortlessly likeable, so charmingly cool, that I would watch any dross that they appear in. Sadly, most of those actors appear almost exclusively in dross but its always a pleasure regardless.

In my debut 10 Reasons To Love . . . article we covered my first cinematic man-crush – The Cuse. A man who’s been lucky enough (or clever enough) to land himself a bevy of interesting and varied roles. Well now we come to the second in my personal favourites and sadly it’s rather difficult to collect together 10 quality titles he’s been involved with, but I can safely say that if you’re willing to disband your pre-conceptions, throw out your regulating taste buds, and allow a little joy into your heart then you’ll find plenty to love in my top picks to represent the consistently loveable and watchable Ryan Reynolds.

So grab some pals, some beers if you must, and kick those feet up whilst you take in my 10 Reasons To Love . . . The Reynolds.

(and no – Green Lantern doesn’t make it)

1- Buried (2010)

One of Reynold’s more recent roles and certainly his most impressive. This is a fantastic movie that’s beautifully and inventively filmed, incredibly tense and showcases Ryan at his powerhouse finest.

    2- Van Wilder : Party Liaison (2002)

Nearly a decade ago – Reynolds career took a huge leap into stardom with this – his first true breakthrough role. Sure, it’s dumb, crass and low brow from start to finish, but Ryan’s star power was obvious. Despite his Chevy Chase imitations.

3- Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place (1998)

But his real first break came with his co-starring role in this much loved and short-lived tv series that quickly boiled its title down to the less interesting Two Guys and a Girl. It’s a surprisingly fun sitcom that’s made by Reynold’s performance.

    4- Smokin’ aces (2006)

From the director of Narc comes this insane action-packed melee of violence with a star-packed cast. In truth Reynolds doesn’t lead the pack but this marked one of his first non-comedic roles and his beard is fantastic. Plus – it’s a great fun flick.

    5- Definitely, maybe (2008)

In what is now a yearly vocation for Ryan, this is a sappy a-typical Hollywood date movie. But it’s actually a surprisingly good one. Reynolds is entertaining and loveable throughout and is supported by a generally great cast and a clichéd but affecting set up.

    6- The nines (2007)

Not quite the success that some critics would lead you to believe – The Nines is nevertheless a thoroughly interesting attempt at an existential movie for the mainstream. Reynold’s plays multiple roles with great zest and there’s plenty to discuss upon its rolling credits.

    7- The Amityville Horror (2005)

One of the few success stories from Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes remakes / reboots – this was a damn enjoyable modern revamp of the classic but flawed series. It also showcases a darker side o Reynolds and features plenty of topless Ryan for those female fans out there.

    8- Adventureland (2009)

Ryan doesn’t have much of a part in this, but it’s a great little personal flick from the director of Superbad starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kirsten Stewert. I didn’t love it as much as I’d hoped I would but it’s fun, heartfelt and candid.

    9- Waiting . . . (2005)

Another b-movie style comedy on Ryan’s resume, this one is very much in the vein of Clerks and whilst its less successful it’s still a fun little midnight direct-to-dvd flick and Ryan is entertaining as always.

    10- Chaos theory (2008)

Another of his more left field roles here in this low budget straight-to-dvd Indie flick that has heart and chuckles aplenty but doesn’t quite live up to its premise and is a little odd to be honest. But it’s an interesting and notable role for Ryan.

Ryan Reynolds is a great actor, good comic timing and he’s able to bust his serious chops when he has to. Buried was his showcase, The Nines was good too. I loved him in Just Friends, my favorite of his comedies. I even liked Green Lantern, which was partly because I read the comics growing up and the film was pretty faithful to the origins overall (which can alienate the non-comic readers). The change-up was a hilarious movie too. Cant wait to see him in Safe House with Denzel Washington, RIPD with Jeff Bridges, and the Deadpool spinoff (of course they’re working on the concept for GL2).

i dont know why but this guy creates the opposite affect on me. i just can’t watch anything he is in. i have tried with Amityville (a mess) and Buried (i wanted him buried forever!). he’s like the Canadian Will Smith- another ‘actor’ whose movies I can’t even watch..
