Call of Duty: Ghosts

There have been a slew of modern military shooters in the past few years but none have brought the cinematic experience like Call of Duty. The latest offering from Activision simply entitled Call of Duty: Ghosts seems to give a unique perspective. Taking place in the near future the oil fields of the Middle East are all but gone. All of the states in South America have been unified under an organization calling themselves The Federation.

At the beginning of the single player campaign a group of terrorists hijacks the Orbital Defensive Initiative satellite (or ODIN for short). The strikes from ODIN have transformed a once beautiful United States to a wasteland as craters pockmark the landscape. This sets a great landscape for the campaign as you and your brother go on missions against the Federation. Tagging along with you is Riley (a German Shepard) who not only can scout ahead but can also take down enemies. You can also sync up with Riley taking control of your four legged friend as you sneak around and kill enemies quietly.

While the single player is excellent it might seem short for some as it is completed within 4-6 hours of game play. Multiplayer is different however as there are tons of features that will keep you entertained long after you finish the campaign. The first new mode introduced is called Squads which is separate from traditional multiplayer. What Squads does is it puts you in charge of your own AI squad and you go head to head with another player. This evens the playing field as you can go into a match and rank up with your AI’s help of course. The AI is quite smart as they call out positions, cover other squad mates and of course rack up kills. This is a boon to people who want to play in multiplayer but don’t want to lose match after match to more skilled opponents.

The new multiplayer modes range from the old tried and true (team death match and free for all) to some new ones to keep things interesting. Cranked is a new game mode as each time you get a kill a thirty second timer starts. In that thirty seconds you need to get another kill and if you do so the timer resets. However, if you fail you will explode and die making the matches faster paced. Each kill will not only rank up your character but it grants you points that you can unlock new weapons, equipment, skills, kill streaks and even new skins.

There is no zombie mode in Call of Duty: Ghosts but there is a new mode called Extinction. Instead of going up against zombies in this mode you are trying to save the earth from an alien invasion. The objective of this game is you are given a drill and you need to destroy the enemy hives. While the drill is in operation it is vulnerable to attack from aliens so you need to protect it. If the aliens destroy the drill or your health drops to zero the game ends and you’re given a final score. As you progress through the map you will be able to buy weapons and restock on ammo. You can also use the money to call in some needed equipment such as a portable mini gun turret. There are four classes in this mode and each has their own strengths and weaknesses and the game can be played either solo or online with 3 other people.

One of the setbacks of this game is if you are a PC gamer as the system requirements are quite high. You will need to have a 64 bit operating system (as it will not run on a 32 bit os), 6 GB of ram, Core 2 Duo E 8200 (2.66 GHz) and an NVidia 450 GTS. These are some REALLY steep requirements as I have yet to see another game on the market have such high minimum standards to get the game running. The game was run on a desktop that has an E8500 and an Alienware M14X and while they both run the game fine the load times are ridiculous (even on the Alienware they are long!)

If you are a fan of Call of Duty you need to get this game as the single player campaign is action packed and multiplayer is also really fun to play! Call of Duty Ghosts is available on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 now and will be coming to the PS4 and Xbox One when those systems are released.
