I, like many, have been following this story with a great deal of what can only be called intensity, so I am pleased to post that the role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby will be played by Carey Mulligan.
Luhrmann broke the news to Deadline saying, “The results from the workshop process on The Great Gatsby have been very encouraging. There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”
At the moment casting stands as Leonardo DiCaprio playing Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire is expected to take the role of Nick Carraway. No word yet on the rest of the cast.
The photo posted is of Carey Mulligan in her role as Daisy at one of the rehearsals, so it gives an idea of what’s to come.
I can admit that I wasn’t extremely enthusiastic when I first heard the news, but upon further reflection I’m getting more into the idea. I’m a fan of Mulligan’s spectacular performances, from An Education to Never Let Me Go, and I think I trust her enough to play this part properly. How do you feel about it?
