Deadline is reporting on the increasing likelihood that The Great Gatsby, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, will be Baz Luhrman’s next film. According to reports, Luhrmann did a workshop of the screenplay with Leonardo DiCaprio reading Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire reading Nick Carraway and Rebecca Hall (The Town) reading Daisy Buchanan. Apparently Luhrmann is relatively set on the male casting but is further opening his search for Daisy. Some of the names on the list are: Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Scarlette Johansson.
Some of these actresses are already committed to films but it’s a pretty good wish list. I find the list interesting because you can kind of tell what kind of daisy each of the actresses would bring to the table. I have to admit that some of the names worry me as a huge fan of the novel, but being a fan of Luhrmann as well I like to think I can trust his judgment… or, I hope I can.
