The process that studios go through to pick a director for a project is often one that’s hidden from public view, with nothing more than rumours of potential hires and people who make a play for the job. This often leads to speculation of what certain films would look like under the guidance of other directors who may have been interested. While until now, speculation is all that film fans have had to go on, recently a few pitch reels have been released to the public. Pitch reels are short trailers put together by directors who want to give a studio an idea of their vision for a film. In most cases, the casting or story may not end up the way the pitch reel displays it, but it’s nonetheless a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of sertain people with regards to projects they were pursuing.
First up, we have a look at Joe Carnahan’s pitch reel for Daredevil. Carnahan’s last movie was the Liam Neeson-starring The Grey.
Next, we have a pitch reel for Kevin Tancharoen’s version of The Hunger Games. Tancharoen’s last feature film was 2009’s Fame, and he also has Glee: The 3D Concert Movie to his credit.
The last pitch reel made available to the public is that of Frederico D’Alessandro’s Halloween remake D’Alessandro’s only directing and writing credit is the 2010 short Recollection; however, he is a noted storyboard artist, with films such as Where the Wild Things Are and The Avengers to his credit.
Here they are: Enjoy!
