Jon Favreau Predicts a Summer Box Office “Bloodbath” in 2011

With such a lackluster Summer this 2010, how could the movie studios make up to their loyal consumers? How about a full out brawl in the Summer of 2011? Luckily, we will be treated to not only some of the biggest blockbusters from established franchises, but some really interesting original films that could be potential money makers.

In 2011 we are greeted with some big familiar franchise faces: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, X-Men: First, Fast Five (Fast and the Furious 5), Cars 2,  Rise of the Apes, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, and Final Destination 5.

We are also introduced to some new superheroes making their fresh adaptation appearances with Thor, Green Lantern, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Other films such as Super 8, Friends with Benefits, Cowboys and Aliens, The Smurfs 3D, Fright Night,  and Conan 3D are also some notable entries to the blockbuster Summer that could be overwhelmed by the big wigs.

Not to mention Sucker Punch, Battle: Los Angeles, Paul, Footloose, Scream 4, and The Thing that will be released before May.

Jon Favreau was recently interviewed by the LA Times about his new film adaptation, Cowboys and Aliens, and could only be nervous as some of the heavyweights could potentially threaten his release of the not so recognized comic book franchise. Metaphorically, Favreau visualizes one of the bloodiest battles of World War II to emphasize the box office next Summer:

“It’s Omaha Beach, it’s going to be a bloodbath. There’s never been a summer like this next summer. It’s going to be bloody [for filmmakers and the studios]. As we were sticking thumb tacks in a calendar we realized that this is going to be looked back upon as Omaha Beach.

“There’s not a weekend where there won’t be teeth on the floor. The audience wins but it’s going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D,  so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there’s going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead.”

As someone who has been unimpressed by the outcome of this Summer’s film releases, I am highly looking forward to an epic 2011. Perhaps studios are preparing for the worst and that the Mayan predicted disaster of 2012 really will happen. The gloves come off next year and some of the highest grossing franchise duke it out to be crowned the winner of 2011. Now all I have to do is start saving my pennies for all those movies.

Which films are you looking forward to? Who will be the big winner?
