New X-Men spin-off to star Mystique?

Since her role as Mystique in the X-Men film series, Rebecca Romijn has been seen mostly on TV (Ugly Betty and the upcoming Eastwick) and in one slightly off the radar movie, Lake City. With 20th Century Fox opening the doors to a whole host of possibilities by trademarking X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men Origins: Magneto, Romijn could be shapeshifting her way into another Hollywood blockbuster.

Mystique has been one of the more interesting, kick-ass characters in the X-Men series although her story isn’t really inline with the original Marvel tale in which she is, at various points in time, Nightcrawler’s mother , the foster mother to Rogue and the former lover of Victor Creed (Sabertooth) with whom she had another child, Graydon Creed. In the comics she’s definitely less of a side-kick and more of a go-getter, rising in the ranks of the United States Department of Defense to the role of Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Planning Agency with access to military secrets and advanced weaponry. Sweet.

There was some talk of Storm getting a spin-off, but that was probably put to rest because Halle Berry was beyond boring in what could have been a great role. And there’s also been some mention of another called X-Men: First Class, set to tell the tale of the first of Professor Xavier’s students – namely Jean Grey, Cyclops and Beast.

According to ShowBizSpy, Romijn says she’s good to go regarding her comeback as Mystique… right after she loses her baby weight.
