Nintendo Venturing into Smartphones and Tablets

Nintendo has announced a new partnership with DeNA Co. to create and operate new applications for smart devices and build a new multi-device membership for consumers worldwide.

What this means for consumers is that Mario, Link, and Donkey Kong could soon be making a journey to mobile devices such as the iPhone. Using both Nintendo’s IP and DeNA’s ability to create mobile games, this should allow Nintendo to reach a much broader audience than ever before.

Nintendo has long avoided the world of mobile phones and has always kept its intellectual property close to its vest. This is a huge move for Nintendo, perhaps signaling that the higher ups finally understand where the money can be made. Since Sony has already made the move, it seemed logical that Nintendo would cave to the pressures of the industry. It looks like that have finally found a way to make it work that benefits them.

In addition, Nintendo will be creating a unified online membership that will be able to be used smart devices, PC and Nintendo platforms, such as the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U. The membership will be built upon DeNA’s experience in the field and is set to launch in the Fall of 2015.
