Website ComingSoon.net recently spoke to producer Mark Johnson about the third installment to the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader..

The third chapter finds Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace, swallowed by a painting and mystically placed aboard the Dawn Treader ship. Along with friend Prince Caspian, the children sail to the far off Lone Islands where they duke it out with slave traders and other enchanted villains.

Unlike the first two Narnia films, the third, directed by Michael Apted, will not be a direct adaptation. Instead, Apted wanted to create a new vision by giving the next installment a genuine feel. “I want to make a movie based on my recollection of it [as a child]” ha said. Taking on the imagination of a child, Apted felt that more would come out of the book and more imaginative thought would be put on screen.

Producer Johnson says “It’s a whole new franchise; I think it’s really benefiting from it.” So far, the two films of the franchise have grossed more than $400 million at the domestic box-office. The third film is scheduled for a December 10, 2010 release.
