Cue the Disney has no original ideas music.
The Mouse House will dig into one of their most profitable live-action entries in awhile as Deadline reports that they are set to move forward with a sequel to Maleficent with star Angelina Jolie possibly returning.
Linda Woolverton will write the sequel. She wrote the first film, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, the upcoming Alice sequel, and the live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation.
The first Maleficent took a lot to make with a estimated budget of $180 million, but grossed $760 million worldwide. It will be interested with Jolie involved if Disney would allow her to do the sequel, but she could have a lot on her plate with the actress also being courted by Marvel to direct Captain Marvel.
Deadline notes that Jolie has been apart of sequel talks with two of her other hits, Salt and Wanted, but ended up not joining the projects to star. I wouldn’t think that this would be a similar situation, but with her becoming more in-demand in the director’s chair, it could be something to keep an eye out for.
This news comes after Disney has set live-action adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Dumbo, Pinocchio, and Cinderella, which debuted this year.
