Sigourney Weaver opts out of the Expendables spinoff ‘Expendabelles’

Sigourney Weaver

One of the most iconic action characters of the past 35 years is Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, who has fought various xenomorphs through the course of the Alien quadrilogy. With The Expendables 3 opening in theatres this past weekend, talk had heated up in recent months of an all-female spinoff of the franchise, centred on a similar conceit of reuniting action heroines of yesteryear and present day. With the writers and director set, speculation had turned to the starring roles, with Weaver’s name put forward by many, including producer Sylvester Stallone. However, the Hollywood Reporter has now announced that Weaver has formally passed on the project, leaving the movie without a single confirmed castmember for now.

While this is a setback for the movie, particularly as Stallone himself had expressed interest in Weaver’s involvement, the project is unlikely to die as a result. Weaver’s exit, however, may open the door for someone such as Linda Hamilton to take on the lead role, as her Sarah Connor is a similarly iconic character. Those anticipating the film, in the meantime, can also look forward to a competing project from Dredd and The Grey producer Adi Shankar, which has already signed Katee Sakhoff and Gina Carano, as well as the recently released Asylum Productions feature Mercenaries, with Vivica A. Fox, Kristanna Loken, and Zoe Bell.
