Despite the fact that Piranha 3D didn’t make huge box office numbers on opening weekend (only $10 million), Dimension Films has issued a press release announcing that they are already developing a follow-up with both director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton returning. Considering Piranha 3d only has an estimated $24 million budget, the film should easily make up for that amount theatrically, leaving DVD/Blu-ray sales and rentals has pure profit.
Mark Canton was quoted saying, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”
Although they do not have a script yet, Aja has said in past interviews that they have many ideas for possible sequels: “We had many ideas. There is the Full Moon Party in Thailand, a huge event with like 200,000 young people from all around the world taking mushrooms and partying on the beach.”
Piranha 3D opened with fantastic reviews including from our very own critics (read our review here). It is also enjoying a very Fresh rating of 80-82% favourable reviews on the popular movie review site ROTTEN TOMATOES throughout it’s opening weekend and is taking everyone by surprise with it’s much-talked about campaign to be named Best Picture of the year.
