Robocop is coming back in a big way this season with a brand new reboot. While many have been rushing to judgement on the movie prior to its release for numerous reasons, that doesn’t mean cinephiles get to have all the fun. Boom! Studios is looking to cash in on all the excitement with their new weekly series that utilizes the soon to be released films timeline. Unfortunately, anyone looking for vindication for this unnecessary reboot should look elsewhere, because Robocop: Hominem Ex Machina isn’t going to convert anyone. In fact, it’ll probably scare some people away.

The problem with the book lies in its lack of originality. It’s a routine cops versus gangster plot dragged down by muddled art and a boring, cookie cutter cast. The script reads like a poorly written Judge Dredd story and offers nothing new to the Robocop mythos. What will really bother readers is how watered down this Robocop is. He shoots electric bullets to subdue his enemies. Gone is the glorious ultra-violence of the 80’s. Instead, we usher in a new phase in the pussification of a beloved franchise. Where’s Frank Miller when you need him?

The art matches the writing perfectly; quickly thrown together and bland as hell. Many are hesitant of film crossover and Robocop: Hominem Ex Machina is a great example of why that is. It’s hard to fault the creative team when they were more than likely only doing as told, but still, what an unpleasant picture.

Robocop: Hominem Ex Machina is a boring, lifeless blunder. Those looking for a good Robocop story should check out Boom!’s Robocop: The Last Stand. Those looking to add fuel to the fire of their Anti-Reboot stance, grab a copy, it’ll help the arguement.
