Much like Paul Thomas Anderson’s previous movie There Will Be Blood, The Master is a portrait of megalomaniac. It is about character interaction, not character development – a study of two souls searching for answers and for belonging. It is also one of the most technically impressive films of the year and one that satisfies on many levels. This is the work of a true artist and quite possibly the best American filmmaker working today. The Master is smart, incredibly well acted, exquisitely shot and assembled with meticulous artistry. While it might be the least accessible film from the director’s cannon, it is nevertheless a film that demands to be seen by any true hardcore cinephile. Which is why I recommend anyone who is a fan of the director and his film The Master, check out the 20 minutes of deleted scenes below. The clips add a certain amount of context to some of the film’s less clear narrative beats and might make you appreciate the movie more.
